The club had applied for two separate cash grants - one for £94,000 to complete the gym's much needed refurb and extension so that new members can join the ABC, and £10,000 for a disabled toilet and new female changing room.

This week councillor Malcolm Aitken, (Lab, Waltham Cross) who had joined the fight to get the club funds was furious at the latest decsion to turn down the clubs application for funding:.

"What a travesty," he said.

"Cheshunt ABC is self funding. By their own effort they raise enough money to run their club.

"They want a one off grant to extend their gym that would enable them to double their membership and to provide access to a healthy, character- building sport for more youngsters in the borough."

"It is a scandal that this council could not be flexible enough to fund this application."

Broxbourne Council did agree to lend the club £60,000 to fund the new gym, but then councillors refused to cough up the cash when club chiefs could not find a guarantor for the loan.

Press officer for Cheshunt ABC, Mick Davidson added: "If we were a hockey or tennis club we'd be inundated with grants but because we are a boxing club and it's a working man's sport, our Tory-run council doesn't want to know."

A council spokesman said: "Providing loans to organisations without a guarantee is not a responsible use of public funds."
